Andorra has no broad coastal lowland: its landscape is built from rugged Pyrenean mountains and the narrow valleys between them. This group belongs to that enclosed upland setting, between France and Spain, where individual valley systems shape the geography of the high ground.

Cold, snowy winters and warmer, drier summers give Andorra a pronounced seasonal rhythm. Its small territory lies wholly inside the Pyrenees, so the valleys remain surrounded by high ground rather than opening into a large national plain or an adjoining coastline.
