Belukha and the other named mountains place this destination in Kazakhstan's far eastern uplands. That setting is distinct from the country's much larger steppe and desert plains, with the Altai relief continuing across nearby international boundaries.

The Altai forms a mountainous frontier shared by several countries, with Belukha standing on the Kazakhstan–Russia boundary. This far eastern corner offers a concentrated high-mountain landscape within a country better characterised at national scale by its enormous steppe, desert and inland basins.
