Tanzania Three Peaks Challenge
Kilimanjaro's three volcanic forms: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira.

Discover Kilimanjaro
Kibo is the central volcanic cone, with Mawenzi to the east and the older Shira formation to the west. Their different shapes matter: Mawenzi is deeply eroded and rugged, while Shira preserves a much lower remnant landscape beside Kibo's higher summit region.
Together, the three formations describe Kilimanjaro's volcanic structure rather than three separate mountain ranges. Kibo's summit region, Mawenzi's jagged outline and the Shira Plateau preserve different stages of the massif's development. The surrounding lower plains emphasise their shared setting on a single enormous mountain in northeastern Tanzania.

The three summits
Kibo
Kibo is Kilimanjaro’s central cone. Its location here is Uhuru Peak, the high point on the southern crater rim.
Mawenzi
Mawenzi is Kilimanjaro’s rugged eastern cone; the location marks Hans Meyer Peak, its highest summit.
Shira
Shira is the older western volcanic formation. The location marks Klute Peak, its named high point above the plateau.
