These elevations belong to the Republic of the Congo's inland terrain, beyond the narrow Atlantic coast. The wider landscape includes plateaus, hills and extensive lower basin country, so this group represents a particular upland setting within a much broader tropical region.

The country's equatorial location brings persistent warmth and humidity, with wetter and drier periods during the year. Inland hill country belongs to this tropical environment, while the lower Congo Basin and the Atlantic coastal belt form separate landscapes around the higher areas.
