Kediet ej Jill anchors this group in northern Mauritania's desert uplands. The selected mountains belong to a Saharan setting, far from the lower Senegal River landscape in the southwest and distinct from the country's Atlantic coastal plain.

Kediet ej Jill is Mauritania's highest mountain group, rising within a predominantly low Saharan landscape. Its prominence comes partly from that contrast with the surrounding plains: this is desert mountain country, far from the cultivated river corridor along the country's southern edge.
