Emi Koussi anchors this group in Chad's northern Tibesti setting. The selected uplands rise within a much larger Saharan landscape, creating a pronounced geographical contrast with the surrounding desert rather than forming part of an extensively forested or temperate mountain region.

Chad spans a major environmental transition from tropical conditions in the south to desert in the north. The Tibesti mountains belong firmly to the northern setting. Their relief is part of the Sahara's internal variety, alongside much lower plains and scattered desert basins.
