Burundi is a predominantly hilly and mountainous inland country, with elevated plateaus rather than a broad coastal plain. Heha and the other named high points belong to that compact upland setting, where changes in relief occur across closely spaced hills and valleys.
Burundi straddles the watershed between the Nile and Congo drainage systems. Its elevated terrain moderates equatorial temperatures, and rainfall follows two broad wetter periods. The mountains therefore sit within both a high plateau landscape and an important divide between major African river basins.
